Installation on LINUX

This document outlines the recommendations for installing Apache Tomcat on a LINUX/UNIX compatible operating system.  The layout of files outlined in this document differ from the default package published by the Apache Software Foundation in order to remain compatible with the File System Hierarchy Standard maintained by the LINUX Foundation.

File System Hierarchy Standard (FHS)

This standard consists of a set of requirements and guidelines for file and directory placement under UNIX-like operating systems. The guidelines are intended to support interoperability of applications, system administration tools, development tools, and scripts as well as greater uniformity of documentation for these systems.
